Slide Seams: The Usual Suspects

Those joints between slide sections? They’re not just cosmetic—they’re carefully engineered to handle movement, pressure, and shifting loads. The flexible, marine-grade urethane caulking that seals them is designed to flex and expand as the slide does. But over time, exposure to UV, pool chemicals, and the constant vibration from riders will wear that sealant down.

Once degradation begins, it doesn’t take much for water to find a path out—and it almost always does. When joints are improperly “glassed over” as a quick fix, it creates a costly problem for the future. These seals prevent any proper access to the area for necessary repairs, meaning that fixing the issue becomes extremely difficult and expensive.

How Baynum Fixes It: Our process involves removing all existing caulk, v-grooving the joint with power tools to ensure clean adhesion, vacuuming and cleaning with acetone, then applying pre-prime and new sealant—filling from the bottom up to eliminate air pockets

Surface Damage: Small Cracks, Big Problems 

As slides age, their fiberglass (FRP) surfaces degrade from sun, water chemistry, and friction. Small cracks or wear spots can form, allowing water to slowly seep through. Left unresolved, these issues escalate. A minor leak becomes a major crack. A crack becomes structural degradation. The longer you wait, the more invasive (and expensive) the repairs become. 

Leaks in aquatic attractions are often symptoms of deeper issues. Over time, escaping water can seep behind slide flumes, weaken structural components, and compromise the surface materials. In fiberglass slides, it can lead to internal delamination—where layers of material separate due to trapped moisture—causing bubbling, blistering, and even full section failures. What begins as a small crack can turn into a large structural concern if not properly addressed.

This is the one you don’t want to find mid-season: laminate separation or structural cracking, often found in high-stress areas like start tubs or heavily loaded transitions. We’ve worked on parks where the slide was losing hundreds of gallons a day from one of these leaks—and it’s not just a water bill issue. Left unaddressed, it becomes a serious safety risk.

    Tempted to coat over a leaking seam with gelcoat? Don’t. Joints are meant to move. Covering them locks the joint, leads to cracking, and creates sharp ride path hazards when that gelcoat fails.

    Keep Sharpies handy for ops teams. When lifeguards or aquatic staff spot a leak during daily walkthroughs, a quick mark makes it way easier for maintenance crews to find and fix the issue. 
  3. Beneath the Surface, It’s Worse
    Seeing water where it shouldn’t be—especially under the start tub or transition zones? Flag it fast. These high-stress areas are where small leaks turn into big structural
